Home Tattoo Removal

A tattoo ready for home removal treatmentThere are many different options for home tattoo removal creams, but however they all have varying degrees of effectiveness. Tattoo removal cream works best on professionally created tattoos, as most amateur or 'home-made' tattoos have their ink situated deeper in the skin's structure, which is hard for the removal cream to penetrate.

Tattoo removal creams are a good alternative to laser tattoo removal and other surgical procedures if the patient does not wish to go through discomfort or possible scarring. But for the creams to be effective there may be a certain amount of discomfort. Most of the treatments will work by chemical exfoliation which helps to remove the upper layers of the skin and breakup the tattoo's ink. The active ingredient is mainly a form of acid, sometimes mixed with an astringent, and this means that the area on which the treatment is applied may tingle or itch somewhat. Therefore many home tattoo removal kits will include a soothing balm to apply to the area after treatment.

Many kits include a massager or similar item to help distribute the cream and work it into the skin layers. This often works better than just using your fingers to rub. Other, low-tech solutions such as using a loofah or sponge may be used too.

Tattoo removal cremes are meant to be used gradually over time, with timeframes of between 6 weeks and 6 months being common, depending on the size of the tattoo and thus the amount of ink used. Most treatments are very easy to apply, taking less than 5 minutes, so as easy to work into your daily schedule as brushing your teeth!
